Luna Park could do with some new attractions. Starting to look very dated. Queues were very long, with kids having to wait for at least 30 minutes per ride. Due to the way that the attendant loaded the ferris wheel, it was a 45 minute wait. The queues to purchase food were just as bad so I would suggest taking your own food. Ticket costs were reasonable, but due to length of queues, the kids didn't get as many rides as we hoped. Purchase of the unlimited rides ticket is the way to go, and pre-purchase them online & avoid the queue.

Luna Park in St. Kilda is Melbourne's only real theme park, and although it is somewhat decent, it could do with a great deal of improvement. I would recommend it mainly to those with kids aged 10 and up who haven't been to a theme park before.
As it is on St. Kilda's Esplanade (opposite the Palais Theatre and nearby the St. Kilda beach) there is frequent access via tram and also a great deal of parking available (however it may be hard to park on evenings when the theatre is hosting and event or concert).

Entry to Luna Park is free, however nothing inside is free. Rides cost around $8 each, or an all day ride pass can be purchased (a good idea, especially if you arrive early or plan on staying there or in the area all day).

The rides in the park are rather average - a spinning spider ride, a mad mouse roller coaster, a ferris wheel, bumper cars, and a few things that spin you upside down or sideways if that's your thing. The most popular attractions at the park are undoubtedly the Scenic Railway coaster which runs around the park's border (giving a great view of the beach and surrounding areas, but can be scary when it is windy), and the beautiful antique carousel (perfect for the whole family). There are also sideshow carnival games (such as laughing clowns) which can be played for an additional cost, and a souvenir store which can get quite pricey with items such as character showbags available.

Food available at Luna Park is quite expensive and while not bad, also not great. A family favourite is the curly fries, however they are not really worth the price. I would recommend bringing a lunch from home, or you are welcome to leave the park to purchase food elsewhere; There is a McDonald's across the road.

In terms of service, I've never had a bad experience at the park, however staff are not always readily available. A noteable experience has been buying a single ride pass and the ride operator insisting my friends and I keep our tickets and go on a second ride with the same ticket - a kind gesture which was much appreciated.

Generally I enjoy including Luna Park as part of a bigger trip to St. Kilda, but wouldn't bother with it otherwise. It is great on a summery Sunday, with the beach, and the Esplanade Market also open; Or if you are attending a concert or event at the nearby Palais theatre, it can be fun to stop at Luna Park for a quick ride beforehand.

*Amazing. oops!

bit pricey given the amount and variety of rides, but given that it's practically the only theme park in melbourne it's not too horrible the main upside is that it's easy to get to, close to the beach and main street where the restaurants are

bottom line i reckon only worth it if you haven't been to before, and if the aren't too many people (lines can be long and frustrating)

Very true. I always have to wait more than 15 minutes for the Scenic Railway.

It's a bit pricey especially for families or groups. The rides are always good and they frequently change one or two around. If you've never been before you definitely have to. I have been about 6 times and it is great, but I do recommend bringing your own lunch foods, because the food is always highly priced and not that healthy. The scenic railways has been there for years and is one of the best rides present. In the morning when it first opens the que is large and pushy so now we purchase out tickets online to go straight in. The wrist band gives you unlimited rides for unlimited time, which is definitely the way to go!

Approximate cost: $Single person about $40

Thanks EyeCandy, I won a family pass so I'm now looking forward to taking the family and not be burdened with the cost of the rides.

I have been here quite a few times over the years. I think it's a bit expensive to take the family, although once you pay for unlimited, you can go on anything as many times as you like. Last time I went on the dodgems, a couple of very small children were also on by themselves. I spent most of the ride sitting still as these kids couldn't drive and blocked every one. Food is average and expensive, so we take our own now. Place looks a bit run down. Book online also to avoid the queue.

Approximate cost: $135 for family

Apparently if you go to melbourne you have to visit luna park in st. Kilda, so i did. I personally thought it was bigger than Sydney's and better. It had better rides than Sydney. The quality was good compared to the one in Sydney but the price was the same which was not impressing.

Approximate cost: $45

this is the only theme park in melbourne so that is what you are paying for. last time i took the kids it cost about $150 and there was only a couple of rides they could go on due to height restrictions. The scenic rollercoaster is nice as you get a great view of st kilda but the line was long. you would pay about the same price to get into seaworld and could spend all day there. At luna park there is about 6 rides to go on.

that sounds a bit dissapointing but thanks for the tip

Meant to be a highlight or tourist attraction of st kilda and melbourne but absolutely needs improving. disgusting quality of food with no health options for children or vegetarians. expensive rides and very unseamless level of service. told to 'walk behind' my toddler as he was in a slow train ride alone even though ticketing office said that an accompaning parent was permitted on the train ride. unserviced toilet facilities and limited shaded areas to have lunch or a rest. not particularly recommended

Approximate cost: $10-150

Agree completely with this review. I visited the park several years ago and enjoyed it, but I was disgusted during my most recent visit.

Yes I agree there needs to be more shaded areas.

So you'll pay for parking, best to take public transport as parking can be tricky, Great for kids, all the rides. On wet days they usually close the scenic railroad ( big rollercoaster ) so best not to attend at those times, great family fun
