This is turning back in time. No offense "Cher". The harsh, unforgiving Mallee landscape spawned courage, ingenuity, grace and determination. This magnetic historical village captures the spirit so well. Jump on the PYAP Paddle Steamer boat trip to get a true riverboat experience. Churn butter, make damper, 'get out of jail', forge your own tent pegs phew; then stop for lunch before you keep going. You need nearly the whole day here. Save some time at the end for a cuppa at nearby SPOONS Cafe and the surprisingly astute Swan Hill Regional Gallery by the banks of the river. Thank goodness the VLine service from Southern Cross station leaves twice a day. It would be a shame to miss out on this in school hols because the train was full. Add this one to the regional tour for sure.

Decided to go here for a look, couldn't believe it cost $27 each, cannot say it was worth it. The historic buildings were interesting as well as the carriages, old shops and tractors (so many tractors). The best part I would say would be the paddle steamer, however that was an extra $21 each aswell. I think this place is great for young families and school excursions but really wasn't for us and would not go again. Overall, very expensive.

Approximate cost: $27

If you want to step back in time this is the place. It is pricey, but there is a lot of maintenance in a place like this. I was also told that most of the people there donate their time, work for free! Wow. Maybe that would explain the few workers there. It was great to see a kangaroo just laying on the grass in front of us. Great tourist attraction for Swan Hill. We didn't take cruise but it looked relaxing.

Approximate cost: $26

We took our 2 year old son and found it to be quite boring for a child of his age - the paddle steamer cruise was good and very relaxing, probably the highlight of our day. Very expensive entry price for what is actually there and also make sure you carry cash with you as there is very limited EFTPOS facilities, most of which have a minimum spend. We were quite disappointed really..

Pioneer Settlement at Swan Hill is probably one of the better maintained of the Old time settlement reconstructions in Australia. The buildings and machinery are constantly being maintained and preserved as is evident whilst exploring the site. A riverboat trip along the Murray and night time activities are also available together with ample food and refreshment outlets plus an adequate souvenir shop. Also explore the reconstruction of the paddle steamer P.S. Gem plus the added adventure of a tour of the island. A great place to visit. I have been there three times and will go again.
